What's the difference between ASTM A554 ornamental tubing and ASTM A312 pipe?

ASTM A554 covers welded stainless steel tubing intended for nonpressure mechanical and architectural applications, like handrails, furniture, structural accents, and fixtures. ASTM A312 is a pressure-rated pipe specification used in process piping systems that must withstand internal pressure. If your project involves decorative or structural applications rather than fluid conveyance under pressure, A554 ornamental tubing is the correct specification.

How do I choose between 304/304L and 316/316L for my application?

Grade selection comes down to the environment. 304/304L handles the majority of architectural, commercial, and general fabrication applications with strong corrosion resistance at a more accessible price point. 316/316L adds 2–3% molybdenum to the alloy, which significantly improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting, making it the preferred choice for coastal installations, chemical processing environments, food and beverage facilities, or any application with prolonged exposure to saltwater or harsh cleaners.

Can ornamental stainless tubing be welded in the field or fabrication shop?
